I arranged with Cassan on a trial class for Little D and Jaron with Growing up Gifted (GUG), Suntec last weekends. Before class, the 2 little boys had their breakfast at Mcdonald. 9.30am, time for class… we are assigned to Classroom 1 with teacher ash & nora and were welcomed by the regular little students from that class.
We began with songs singing and dancing exercising with the toddlers in the class. Both Jaron & Darrell enjoyed roaming around the class and interacting with the rest of the kids. As this is the very first time little D is exploring to new ‘classroom’ environment hence the curiosity for everything in the classroom which includes the waste paper bin, the tables & chairs, the cabinets where we put our belongings and even the whiteboard.
Teacher nora started the kids with small animals, drawn 8 piggy to present each of the little student and make the count from 1 – 8, followed by the alphabet of the day ‘W’… we learnt things relating to the ‘W’ like…. (1) water (2) wipe (3) water-melon (4) willy wizard (opps, did I get the animal name correct??) (5) watch…
Among the above, little D knows watch the best… when teacher nora pronounce the word ‘watch’, he goes around repeating the word ‘watch’ ‘watch’ & ‘watch’… bite-sizes of water-melon were given to the kids too and of course, they love it refreshing!
I find it very enrichment for the teachers to relate the words to real-life example. Like when they learn on ‘wipe’, the teachers will pour some ‘w’ater on the mat and use cloth ‘w’ipe to clean it dry. As such, the toddlers get to expose what is the meaning of wipe.
Though cassan & myself finds it too ‘siong’ + complicated for the toddlers to know what the teachers are talking or doing but I still find it quite useful.
As our little ones are the newbies in the class, we could not get their attention and sit down and watch/listen to what the teachers are doing/talking.
Most of the times, the little ones roam around in the class and we were busy ‘catching’ them back to the mat.
The lesson lasted for 1.5hrs and water/snack break of 10mins. During the water break, parents then took out their snack & water for the little one. My little one shared his honeystars with the classmate on the same table and even feed them. Haha!
After water break, we did some art & craft….Yes!!! simple art & craft….. we did a belt with cotton wool & masking tape.
My very first master art piece with my Darrell. (though, I am the one doing it all the while)
Halfway through, little D starts to get frustrated and pay no attention at anyone including me. He went to the door and hit hard on the door, calling ‘jie jie’ ‘jie jie’ (my helper)… he lost his concentration and wanted to get out of the class badly. No choice, I have to leave the class with him for a walk at the reception and brought him back after he cooled down.
I believed that being the very first time attending a class, he is not able to adapt to the long ‘teaching’ session. It has to be a while before he settle down, am I right?
The teachers are reading on the phonics and basically no toddler understand what its all about (even myself can't catch the rhythm). i guess, it is much of a retention and recognition in their little size mind.
afterall, we still enjoyed the class and will consider him for next year' 2010 intake.
mummies who had send their toddlers to enrichment classes...any comments...?
